Gravity of Grace
THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
The Gravity of Grace was created during worship in the Easter season. In this mixed-media painting, Christ stands with open arms, his figure quietly forming the shape of the cross. His outstretched arms create the horizontal line, while his body and the white pillar beneath him form the vertical—a cross that is present without being immediately obvious.
Christ is wrapped in a cloak of many colors, an echo of Joseph's coat, surrounded by luminous, joyful color. Vintage papers and ephemera are layered throughout the painting, becoming part of its history and texture as the image emerged.
At its heart, The Gravity of Grace is an image of Christ lifted up—arms open, drawing us toward the grace that holds and welcomes us.
